WHO IS Veronza Bowers?

Veronza Bowers, one of the principle organizers of the Black Panther Party in Omaha, Nebraska in the late 60's.

The chapter's life in Omaha was short lived due to many factors, not the least being the intensified police reaction. Veronza (known in the Party as Daoud) resurfaced in California to take on the responsibilities as captain of the Richmond Branch. By 1973 Veronnza had been targeted by COINTELPRO, captured by the state, charged, tried and convicted of murder of a National Park Service Ranger. With there being no physical evidence in order to ensure a conviction. This tactic was used as a part of the considered "Black Extremist Organizations", and Veronza, along with many other Panthers, was caught in their web.

In Veronza's own words: "I was arrested on September 15, 1973, in Mill Valley, California on state charges of robbery, receiving and possession of stolen property pursuant to a federal search warrant. A small army of FBI, Marin County Sherrifs, Berkeley and Oakland City detectives, and Animal Shelter police made a pre-dawn raid which netted four adults, three children and two German Shepards. In state court all the state charges were dismissed because, as the superior court judge as well as the California State Supreme Court said: No probable cause for the issuance of the search warrant can be found within its four corners. Then the feds stepped back in and charged me with first degree murder of a "National Park Ranger". Veronza was convicted primarily on the words of two "informants" collaboration. Veronza reached his mandatory parole date April 7, 2004 and he was scheduled to be released June 14, 2005. The US Attorney rescinded his release without notifying his lawyers. After 40 years Veronza still languishes behind prison walls.

Veronza still languishes behind prison walls to this day.....Veronza has been held 14 years past his mandatory date.
